On December 10, 1968, residents began to move into the nation's largest Mitchell Lama housing complex know as Co-op City. The Housing complex was built on land formerly occupied by an amusement park called Freedomland. 

Saint Michael's Roman Catholic was formally established by Archdiocese of New York, under of Terence Cardinal Cooke, the Archbishop of New York, on December 11, 1969. For several months, during 1969, masses were celebrated in various apartment. Later the year the meeting room of Building 2A (900 Co-op City Boulevard) was used as a Catholic Centre. 

In time space as rented on the lower level, of the shopping center, at Dreiser Loop. This space was converted into the Catholic worship and meeting center. Almost all activities of the new Parish were conducted there.  The space provided for the Parish office and the wordship space where Mass could be celebrated. 

On January 25, 1970, Msgr. Joseph T.V. Snee was installed as the first Pastor of Saint Michael. On Octobre 18, 1970, the Catholic Center of Co-op City was dedicated by Terence Cardinal Cooke. At the Mass, which was celebrated in the Community Auditorium, the Cardinal formally bestowed the name, Saint Michael, upon the Parish.

On September 29, 1984, Father William Di 'Raffaele was installed as Pastor. It was on February 16. 1985, that Fr. Di 'Raffaele initiated correspondence with the Advisory Council on Church Properties regarding additional space for the Parish. At the time there were about 1,599 Catholic Families registered with The Parish. 

On December 3, 1990, the Archdiocese of New York purchased land where the present church stands. The lot was purchased from the City of New York for one million dollars. It was on Saint Michael Feast Day, September 29, 1991, that the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new church took place.  The following year on the Feast of Saint Michael, the cornerstone of new church was blessed by Bishop Herny Mansell, on Decembre of that year First Holy Mass was celebrate. 

On January 16, 1993, the Dedication of Saint Michael's church took place John Cardinal O' Connor, the Archbishop of New York, was the principal celebrant. On May of 1996, Father Luciano was appointed as the Pastor. Father Lucianos responsibility as Pastor not only included the spiritual well-being of the Parishioners but also the task of significantly reducing the over three-million-dollar debt of the Parish and fixing over two hundred construction mistakes and defects in workmanship, which were made in the construction of the new church. 

The Parish of Saint Michael's continues to be a beacon of hope and place of faith and wordship for so many people in the Co-op City community. The multi-ethnic Roman Catholic Parish is a source of strength and grace for those who seek to live their faith in Jesus Christ. It is through Jesus real presence, as found in the Blessed Sacrament, that we are united in the task of building up the Faith for the greater Honor and Glory of God.
