On December 10, 1968, residents began to move into the nation's largest Mitchell Lama housing complex know as Co-op City. The Housing complex was built on land formerly occupied by an amusement park called Freedomland.
Saint Michael's Roman Catholic was formally established by Archdiocese of New York, under of Terence Cardinal Cooke, the Archbishop of New York, on December 11, 1969. For several months, during 1969, masses were celebrated in various apartment. Later the year the meeting room of Building 2A (900 Co-op City Boulevard) was used as a Catholic Centre.
